Young the Giant

A young giant? A giant named Young? Whatever, these guys are good. Never been much into Alt./Indie Rock, but I can’t stop listening to this band. Also can’t quite put my finger on their sound…almost bordering on commercial, but not; slow, deep, but building into loud and upbeat choruses.

The lead vocalist, Sameer Gadhia, seems like an interesting dude (if only because he’s not the typical, indie band, skinny white guy?) He also sounds a bit pretentious (while trying to sound not pretentious…alright, won’t get into that annoying paradox), at least in this interview. Still, I liked one particular response of his to a comment made by the interviewer:

AVC: The indie-music underground is still a really small community. While a site like Pitchfork seems like an enormous institution to hardcore music fans, the average person on the street doesn’t even know what it is.

SG: I think as musicians and as people, we’re constantly inspired and in awe of those normal people. I think it’s a true testament to try to make an impact in those people’s lives. We really love real people. You get caught in the whole storm of the indie-rock scene. You play festivals and you do junkets. It’s just such a small, mini-bubble world of who’s cool and who’s not, and it’s dependent upon how they treat you. I think going through our travels and us trying to be normal, down-to-earth, willing-to-do-anything people, be it watch a football game or whatever. There’s so much snobbery, and that might put us under fire sometimes. It’s who we are. I don’t come from two generations of musicians. My parents are normal. I’m a first-generation American. They’re from India. It’s a completely different thing. I was just raised to try to be a good person. That’s what our goal is. At the end of this, if we can be good people, I think we’ve succeeded.

The band has only released one full, eponymous album, in 2010. Here’s the album art/track list:

1. Apartment, 2. My Body, 3. I Got, 4. Cough Syrup, 5. God Made Man, 6. 12 Fingers, 7. Strings, 8. Your Side, 9. Garands, 10. St. Walker, 11. Island, 12. My Gun

I’m more partial to songs #1-7, but that said, I’m positively nutty about “My Gun” and its chord change at “you’ll drive in my car.” “My Body” would make a sick workout song (check these lyrics: “my body tells me no / but I won’t quit / ‘cause I want more / I want more”–damn straight!), and the opening lines of “Cough Syrup”–“life’s too short to even care at all / losing my mind losing my mind losing control”–are sort of wonderfully earnest.

They’ve posted some live recording on Youtube, which are beautiful, and pretty impressive, that they still sound good minus amps, etc. I suggest checking a couple of them out on their channel, but here’s one of their more popular songs, “Apartment” (which in general is just a lovely video…albeit some of the weird faces Gadhia makes…)

Also, anyone wondering where they shot this…? Because I.want.to.go.there.
Peace,
Drew
